Traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho
USUI Mikao Sensei (1865-1926), the founder of Reiki Ryoho (healing method), attained enlightenment, and a healing ability as a godsend was bestowed upon him in 1922 at the age of 57 while he was fasting and meditating on Mt. Kurama in Kyoto, the ancient capital city of Japan.

The Reiki healing method is enabling our body to channel the energy of the universe and an inspired healing art developed by Usui Sensei, NOT the outcome of his researches, or discovery, or re-discovery.
{In the western countries, it has been incorrect said that the Reiki healing method was rediscovered by Usui Sensei after his researches in Buddhist scriptures}
Usui Sensei thought that this wonderful gift of healing ability should be shared with people. He started to practice and teach.
In 1925 he moved out to a suburb of Tokyo, so as to expand his healing activities. Due to his nation-wide fame, he was very often invited to teach his Reiki Ryoho in other districts, like the Hiroshima area and Saga Kyushu.

Usui Mikao Sensei (1865-1926)
On March 9th, 1926, he passed away on the road (while travelling) at Fukuyama in the Hiroshima Prefecture. Usui Sensei's gravesite and his memorial stone are located at the Saihoji Temple of Jodo-shu or the Pure Land sect of Japanese Buddhism in Tokyo.
{In the West, Usui Sensei is said to be a Christian minister and president of the Christian based Doshisha University in Kyoto. Of note that he was from the beginning to the end a lay Buddhist.}
HAYASHI Chujiro Sensei (1879-1940), after his retirement from the Navy, was initiated in 1925 into a Reiki Teacher by Usui Sensei and opened his Reiki clinic in Tokyo. He initiated 13 Teachers. In 1940 he passed away.
TAKATA Hawayo (1900-1980), a Japanese-American born in Hawaii, was diagnosed with a serious gall bladder disease. She visited Hayashi Sensei in Tokyo and received Reiki treatment. Mrs Takata recovered completely in four months. Then she worked for Hayashi Sensei as a Reiki student for about one year before returning to Hawaii.
Hayashi sensei visited Mrs. Takata in Hawaii in 1938 and initiated her into a Reiki Teacher. Mrs Takata set up her Reiki clinic in Hawaii.
In the 1970's she taught 22 people to be Reiki teachers. It is thanks to her and her students that Reiki has become so popular in the West.
The Reiki Lineage
Reiki lineage refers to the line of Reiki Masters that leads to the student. For traditional Reiki the line begins with Usui Sensei
and continues with one of his Reiki Masters, and then to one of theirs, and so it continues. For a healing system to be called Reiki and
be recognized as such, the lineage must trace back to Usui Sensei.
Our Reiki lineage is depicted below.
